My inspiration for this week’s photo challenge, inside, came from outside. Or rather something moving from inside to outside. While being outside. I spent almost an hour watching a cicada emerge from its shell. I think this counts for my DBT mindfulness exercise for the week.

Sometimes what’s inside needs to come out – especially truths and emotions. From time to time we’re forced out of our protective shells, turning our insides out. Baring our vulnerable insides to the world is uncomfortable but often necessary to grow, just like this big bug.

Squishy and stunted as it emerges, the cicada inside the shell will soon escape, plump up with new strength (and wings!) and harden itself once more against the myriad threats of the big bad world. All applicable metaphors intended.
